Storage for your K9 Treats

Things to Consider
  • Where you live- Homemade treats that are left in a treat jar on the counter will not last as long as ones that are placed in a a cool and dry location then those that are hot and humid.
  • Preservatives- Store bought treats may last long because of their preservatives. This is why we created Treats 4 Buddy because of all those undesirable additives Including the preservatives. (Not all preservatives are bad such as vitamin C and E.)
  • Ingredients- The type and amount of certain ingredients play a part in how you store homemade K9 treats. If you have purchased treats with meat and/or meat juices, they will need to be refrigerated and will not last as long as other treats.
  • Moisture- The moisture, texture and denseness of treats you have chosen play a part. A crunchy or hard treat will last weeks longer then those that are soft or moist training treats or cupcakes.
  • Cool- Even though you are so cool for purchasing homemade K9 treats for your dog I am talking about temperature. Before storing your homemade treats you need to be sure that the treats avoid condensation in the fridge. This will avoid mold which is not good for your K9.
  • Light- you and your dog treats have an enemy. Its light. Well really direct bright sunlight and heat is another problem. The Best place to store your treats is in a cool, dark and dry place. This could be a pantry or cupboard away from stove and microwave ovens. This will help for your treats last longer.
KEEP IN MIND....

REFRIGERATOR- Using an airtight container is the best way to go. If you use this method your treats can last for at least 2 months in the refrigerator.

FREEZER- If you use an airtight container your homemade K9 treats should last for at least 8 months in the freezer.

DEPENDING ON YOUR TREAT YOU MAY WANT TO BRING THE REFRIGERATED OR FROZEN TREATS TO ROOM TEMPERATURE BEFORE SERVING OR IF YOUR DOG LOVES ICE CUBES AND OTHER COLD TREATS HE OR SHE MAY ENJOY THEM STRAIGHT FROM THE FRIDGE OR FREEZER.
